Convertible Trunk and Top Fabrication Videos for the 240Z-280Z
$25 per DVD (both titles required)
Fabricating a convertible top for the 240Z-280Z has been a 9-year learning experience for us. The first cars we converted were great—except we didn’t plan for a top. The trunk was too long to accommodate a folding-back top. A convertible top should fold back easily, preferably as effortlessly as a Miata’s top. Eventually, we reshaped the trunk to fit the dimensions of a stock TR-7 top frame, which provided the perfect solution. The sheet metal work was easy compared to fitting a top in the small space behind the seats.
ZTherapy (formerly Datsun Z Convertibles of Merced, CA) starts with a stock TR-7 frame. To this, we weld bracketry to accept “L” shaped American car weatherstripping, which wraps around the window edge. The stainless steel window surround stays in place where it meets the windshield, providing tension and guidance. We also add a second tension roller to the door to push the window in. The weatherstripping bracketry also forms the top shape as it transitions from the windshield header cap.
The top header (the part of the top frame that meets the windshield) is a clamshell design. The TR-7 piece features a lower section that meets the weatherstripping, while the upper section creates the top’s curved transition.
To ensure the top lays flat on the strut towers, you’ll need to cut 2” out of the strut tower sheet metal. Then, slice out 2” of the strut tube below the spring perch. This maintains the ride height and does not alter the spring rate. By lowering the strut tower, the top will lay flat and flush with the trunk lid. Some cars may require adjustments with a sledgehammer to flatten the wheel well where it meets the top frame.
No convertible would be complete without a tonneau cover. This marine-grade vinyl covering for the cockpit snaps into place and saves the top from wear. It’s also more convenient than putting the top up at every stop. ZTherapy tonneaus feature a zipper down the middle, allowing the driver’s side to be open while driving. With proper padding, the tonneau can double as a boot cover for the stowed top.
Convertible Top Fabrication Video:
This complete fabrication guide shows you how to custom-fabricate a top for the 240Z-280Z and Ferrari 250GTO convertible using a Triumph TR-7 top. It’s a great instructional tool for any car top fabrication project and covers topics like:
• Using American “L” shaped weatherstripping around the windows for an airtight seal
• Frame construction and fabric modification
• Strut tower lowering
• Snap lip fabrication
• Windshield metal design for weatherstripping
• Cable tensioners
• Fabric stretching
• Snap installation
• Metal fabrication
• Padding, and more
The video runs over 5 ½ hours long and is perfect for the Z car enthusiast.
FOR THE Z CAR:
This project isn’t difficult, just time-consuming! You’ll need the ZTherapy trunk design (get the ZT video), a welder, tin snips, grinder, TR-7 top frame, a new TR-7 fabric top, and support from an upholstery shop.
FOR THE FERRARI 250 GTO (VR, AZZCar, StableWorks, Alpha, etc.):
All the above, plus a template to fix your fiberglass opening behind the seats and trim work.
FOR OTHER CARS:
A primer on top construction. Watch for design engineering, theory of operation, car limitations, fold geometry, and more.
Ordering Info:
These videos are $25 per DVD. The tape is over 5 hours long, recorded in EP mode to fit everything onto one tape. The view quality is good. VHS is also available.
Please don’t call for information—it’s all in the video. I get 3-4 hours of phone calls daily about this top design and I never get any work done! Buy the tape and I’ll show you how to do it!
